Korce County: Southeastern Albania, Lake Ohrid, and Cultural Identity
Southeastern Albania's Korce County has a population of about 173,000 and shares borders with both Greece and North Macedonia. The county seat, Korce, sits at roughly 850 metres elevation on a high plateau, giving it colder winters than most Albanian cities. French military presence during World War I left a cultural mark that persists in the city's nickname, "little Paris of Albania", though the comparison is generous. The first Albanian-language school opened here in 1887, and the city retains a reputation for education and the arts.

The Albanian section of Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO-listed transboundary site shared with North Macedonia, covers roughly a third of the lake's total surface. Birra Korca, Albania's oldest brewery established in 1928, remains a point of local pride and one of the country's most recognised consumer brands.
